On Honouring Our Teachers - ‘Because She’s in it For the Outcome’

Last September I was awarded with the opportunity to attend WE DAY UN in New York, through KiDz HuB Media Network. KiDz HuB is an international organization that provides a platform which trains and mentors youth to become Junior Broadcaster.

As a Junior Broadcaster I interviewed various change makers and activists that were passionate about giving back and doing so in their own unique ways. I left New York feeling motivated and inspired to start my Year Of Actions and start making a difference in my local community. I had several ideas even before coming home to Jamaica, however I realized that I wouldn’t be able to execute them. Not because it was impossible, but time would not allow me to execute and if I’m being honest I was afraid of failing.

I finally got an idea that I knew I would be able to carry out, the trick was to start small. Recently teachers went on a 3 day strike because they weren’t receiving the pay they wanted and deserved. What could a 16 year old do to possibly show her appreciation to teachers who go above and beyond for their students? I decided to reward a teacher from Jamaica College (one of the most prestigious schools in Jamaica), Ms. M. Brown, who is one of the most caring teachers a student will ever meet. I asked several students at the school about the type of teacher and person she is on a whole and the answers I received were all positive. I made my way to JC and surprised her with a gift at her staff room however she was confused because she had no idea who I was and frankly I had never met her before.

I am extremely passionate about giving back and I am happy that I was able to put a smile on not just Ms. Brown’s face but also her colleagues. The goal is to reach to as much high schools and primary schools in the Kingston and St. Andrew area and then branching out into the other parishes in Jamaica. In doing so I hope that other students will join me in honouring our teachers. Can you guess which school I’ll be heading to next?
